The only odd thing I have found is that when you go into LGF search to look up how people have commented on a post you can only see how many people have dinged not who has dinged you.

So yeah, I get to work tonight less than 5 minutes after the power across the property went out. There’s no estimate as to when it’ll be restored. And without power, I can’t do much of anything besides sit here at the front desk getting asked variations of the same question over and over again: “When will the power be back on?”

Political Science, Putin Style:

No one likes us, I don’t know why
We may not be perfect, but heaven knows we try
And all around, even our old friends put us down
Let’s drop the big one, see what happens

We sell them petro, but are they grateful?
No, they’re spiteful and they’re hateful
They don’t respect us, so let’s surprise them
We’ll drop the big one and pulverize them

Asia’s crowded, Europe’s too old
Africa is far too hot, and Canada’s too cold
And Odessa, Texas stole our name
Let’s drop the big one, there’ll be no one left to blame us

We’ll save Australia
Don’t wanna hurt no kangaroos
We’ll build a Soviet Union amusement park there
They got surfing too!

Boom goes London, boom Paris
More room for you, and more room for me
And every city, the whole world ‘round
Will just be another poor Russian town
Oh, how peaceful it’ll be
We’ll set everybody free
You wear a Japanese kimono, babe
There’ll be Italian shoes for me

They all hate us anyhow
So let’s drop the big one now
Let’s drop the big one now

It’s a great tune, originally in French, that was on the soundtrack of a 1946 movie called Les Portes De La Nuit (Gates of the Night). Translated into English and sung by Nat King Cole ten years later, it became a hit in America.

She Who Must Be Obeyed’s band Diminished Seventh does it in both English and French, with a much more jazzy vibe than the posted video.

During the 2020 election, Jared Kushner tried to artificially ‘inflate’ Donald Trump’s sinking numbers in the polls against Joe Biden, according to New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman’s new book. Within Team Trump, Haberman reports, the purpose of Kushner’s request was clear — he just wanted to juke the survey numbers, in the hopes of keeping his father-in-law from flying into a rage,” Rolling Stone reports.

A variety of Trump’s closest confidants were similarly happy to indulge Trump in the claims that the public polling had to be rigged against him, and the delusion that there was simply no way he could be trailing his Democratic foe.

It is such delusion that stroked the flames of “election was stolen” lies.

As Hurricane Ian charged toward the western coast of Florida this week, the warnings from forecasters were growing more urgent. Life-threatening storm surge threatened to deluge the region from Tampa all the way to Fort Myers,” the New York Times reports.

“But while officials along much of that coastline responded with orders to evacuate on Monday, emergency managers in Lee County held off, pondering during the day whether to tell people to flee, but then deciding to see how the forecast evolved overnight.”

“The delay, an apparent violation of the meticulous evacuation strategy the county had crafted for just such an emergency, may have contributed to catastrophic consequences that are still coming into focus as the death toll continues to climb.”

But of course they did

Ha! I am impressed, although I probably should have known, that you were familiar with the French 75, both in cannon and in drink.

British novelist Alec Waugh described the “Soixante-Quinze” as “the most powerful drink in the world”.

Family anecdote - When my father joined the Army ROTC back in the late 1930’s they were trained as horse drawn artillery with, you guessed it, French 75’s. When war was declared, he was moved to Ordnance.

That is a critical job. And, without drivers sitting on top on a load of tons of high explosives driving into the combat zone, the artillerymen are absolutely useless.

I am glad he made it back to his family and the farm in Wisconsin after that time in France doing, as you said, an utterly critical job. I was too young to understand while he was with us, but I remember him fondly. A very classic old dairy and pork farmer and his wife living in a simple house next door to us. I remember their huge (4’ tall) old 1930’s radio that I always regretted disappeared after they passed.

I always remember when my cousin would stay with them, and we’d get called in from playing for Sunday dinner - chicken and rice. I have the recipe she used, and it is still my ultimate comfort food.

Why does 75 end with quinze but others like 65, 85 end in cinq?

My French is very limited but 60 is soixante, 65 is soixante-cinq (60+5) while 75 is defined as 60 + 15, soixante-quinze.

Even weirder is that “eighty” is expressed as “quatre-vingt”, literally “four twent(ies)”, and numbers above 90 as 80 + 15 or whatever.

A couple of interesting tweets about what he calls third spaces, the place you would go that is not work or your house, where you would meet other people, such as your friends, and how we have lost them because of our spreading out in the suburbs and how long commutes leave us little time for them. These third spaces were places like churches, barber shops, and bars. In some cases, we have tried replacing them with things like online blogs, but we lose that in-person interaction.

I was out with my eleven inch refracting telescope to image Jupiter and noticed that landing airliners were passing close to the setting moon, so I tried a grabshot and it worked! My camera’s viewscreen went dark (power saver feature) a few seconds before the plane passed through the field, so it was as blind shot as well.

Here is one of my Jupiter images, an unstacked single frame. There was an Io shadow transit tonight, and the great red spot was visible, as was the moon Ganymede (faintly) off to the right. I’ve posted images from this telescope here earlier, taken with a 2X Barlow which gives it a nine meter plus focal length (and makes it optically a classic telephoto)

Nations extradite their own citizens to other countries all the time. That is the purpose of extradition treaties.

Common law countries may extradite their own citizens.

Civil law countries like France rarely do.

I was wrong about Canada not making a formal extradition request. They did. In August of 2022.

Your own article from APTN says that an Interpol arrest warrant was issued by Canada, but was stayed in 2017 due do lack of cooperation of France.

In an article linked from the article I posted it claims there was an Interpol red notice, but the image in that article is of a Canadian arrest warrant.

No other article on the site claims there was a red notice.

The whole mess seems to be that previous Canadian governments just couldn’t be bothered and Canada is blaming the French for their own lack of action.

Why does 75 end with quinze but others like 65, 85 end in cinq?

Because French numbers go:

One, two, three … Ten, eleven, twelve…
Sixteen, ten seven, ten eight, ten nine,
Twenty, twenty and one, twenty two,…
Sixty, sixty and one, sixty two,….
sixty ten, sixty eleven, sixty twelve…
Sixty sixteen, sixty ten seven, sixty ten eight…
Four twenties, four twenties one,….
Four twenties ten, four twenties eleven,…
Four twenties ten seven…

75 is “soixante quinze”, i.e sixty fifteen.

Like “four score and seven years ago”.

A sailor charged in connection with starting a fire that destroyed a Navy warship while it was docked in San Diego has been found not guilty.

Seaman Recruit Ryan Mays was acquitted on charges of willful hazarding of a vessel and aggravated arson, the Navy said in a statement, following a court martial in which a judge ruled there was not enough evidence that Mays set the fire that destroyed the USS Bonhomme Richard more than two years ago.

After the judge issued the verdict, Mays collapsed on the table and sobbed, his defense attorney Gary Barthel said, feeling as if a thousand-pound weight had been lifted off his shoulders.

Outside the courthouse, Mays said he was “grateful that this is finally over” and called it “the hardest two years of my entire life.”

“I’ve lost time with friends. I’ve lost friends. I’ve lost time with family, and my entire Navy career was ruined,” Mays said. “I am looking forward to starting over.”

A Navy spokesperson, Cmdr. Sean Robertson with the US 3rd Fleet, told CNN in a statement, “Seaman Recruit Mays was found not guilty on the charges of willful hazarding of a vessel and aggravated arson. The Navy is committed to upholding the principles of due process and a fair trial.”

Yeah, a lot of Putin’s speech yesterday sounded like it was written by the folks at the Family Research Council.

And Okhlobystin’s speech basically quoted Sorokin’s Day of the Oprichnik, in a postpostmodern way.

For some reason “goyda”, a word not really used in today’s Russian, was translated as “Hail!” in the official English edition, instead of remaining as it is. I replaced it back:

“Goyda!” cries Batya.
“Goyda! Goyda!” we roar in reply.
Batya takes a step. And we follow him, we follow the head of the caterpillar. Batya leads us into the pool. It’s spacious, roomy. It’s filled with warm water instead of ice water.
“Goyda! Goyda!” we shout, embracing each other, shuffling.
We follow Batya. We walk. We walk. We walk in caterpillar steps. Our genitals glow, our members shudder between buttocks.
We enter the pool. Around us the water boils with air bubbles. Batya submerges himself up to his genitals, then to his waist, his chest. The entire oprichnik caterpillar enters the pool. And rises.
Now it’s time to be silent. Muscular arms tense, valiant nostrils flare, the oprichniks have begun to moan. The time for the sweet work has come. We coax each other. The water ripples around us, waves heave, splashing out of the pool. And now the long-awaited moment has come: a tremor rolls through the entire caterpillar.
And:
“Goyda-a-a-a-a-a-a-a!”
The arched ceiling shakes. And the pool—becomes a nine-point storm.
“Goyda-a-a-a-a!”
I roar into Nechai’s ear, and Buben screams into mine:
“Goyda-a-a-a-a”
Lord, don’t let us die…

We wound up with just over 2 inches of rain - giving us 8.80 for September and 49.10 for the year. Thankfully no wind damage or flash flooding. For context, we are now at our average annual precipitation with 3 months still to go. It’s been like this for the past 5 years, so at some point the averages have to adjust, right? I was told 20 years ago not to put anything in e-mail that I wouldn’t want read aloud from the witness box…

That was entirely too late for me, as a chat log containing a blistering, paint-peeling set of expletives I typed in IRC was entered by Scientology as evidence in a copyright case. That would have been around 1996. Did it cause me to modify my speech on IRC? Not really.

ETA: I reminded myself that I was the person who compiled and posted to Usenet the 101 Things (and more!) To Do With Dead Elron’s Skull. I sourced most of it from IRC. Which truly infuriated Scientology. The funny part is that L. Ron Hubbard was cremated, so there’s no skull, but they were still offended. Would I do it today? Probably not, because everyone knows Scientology is bad, I’m not needed to mock anymore.

Speaking of mocking, tomorrow morning I’m going to protest at a church I’ve not protested at before. Partly because it’s new, and partly because I didn’t really have a good reason, besides the fact that the pastor is anti-LGBTQIA, but SO MANY ARE. (Where do I start?) I mentioned the backstory yesterday, which is basically that Costi Hinn, who formerly worked for his uncle, prosperity preacher Benny Hinn, left and is now?/was a second-tier star on the white wing Reformed circuit. He is also the pastor of this church, in one town over.

Earlier this week, a podcast where Hinn berated Douglas Wilson, the wannabe pope of the Palouse (Moscow, ID) was posted. Hinn criticized Wilson not for his authoritarianism, not for his coverups of child sexual abuse, not for approving of wife abuse, not for marrying off one of his school’s teachers to a pedophile, none of that. No, Costi berated Doug Wilson for the latter’s foul mouth.

So we get this…and just to be clear, many of the people who are saying that Costi should not have apologized are not people I would generally associate with. To wit (and it gives a tiny bit more background):

Anyway, so in light of the fact that Douglas Wilson has a lot of very powerful supporters, who really LOVE the fact that he’s a raging asshole who says outrageous things, is it rubbing it in if I were to stand on the sidewalk with a sign saying:

Costi Hinn is owned by Doug Wilson

Especially if I know (because it was broadcast on Twitter) that Hinn is supposed to talk to Wilson on Monday?

Yes, similar but instead of chicken we use chashu-pork and often mix in pickled mustard greens.

I just posted the Kenji video because he gives the easiest to follow directions. We rarely use chicken - minced ham or smoked pork are our go-tos. I’ve been using basmati rice because it’s practically clump free. I use oyster sauce and/or sweet soy for flavor. Fried chili oil works great

Mrs. Fish makes it with fried eggs, an assortment of vegetables, and about 16 different Asian spices and sauces, including soy and fish sauce. It’s practically an art form for her now.

These GQPers are so terrified about getting primaried the next time around, they feel the need to oppose things they helped draft - especially if said draft would, you know, actually help people.

Contrast that with Dems Pat Ryan and Mary Peltola both getting bills passed through the House to give them some cred going into the general election.

DeSantis is using the codeword “looter” for “black or minority”. Otherwise an armed response to white people out there might well draw an armed response from them since they can freely carry guns also and can also be “standing their ground” if confronted.

And as you well know the amendments and carrying of weapons may say one thing on the books and in the letter of the law, but it is not evenly enforced.

Catching up:

On LGF new system upgrade: works well on iPhone 13. Less bouncy. Troubleshooting is paying off. Btw I was an alarm tech before an engineer and I brought that skill set to the job thinking nbd. I quickly found out bringing a flashlight, leatherman tool and hey let’s check that outlet mentality was essential in big conference rooms. Many cumulative wasted hours avoided by expeditionary repair on a Formica table

On Navy jurisprudence:
Pinning it in one guy and proving it was nearly impossible in the San Diego dry dock ship fire Many unanswered questions about air pollution from the fire
Fat Leonard could have hidden the USS John McCain from Trump
Fastest drive to San Diego in daylight was when I rented a Charger just like the one Gibbs drove on NCIS and wife and I had new matching Big 5 -Serengeti sunglasses. People just got the hell out of the way for 180 miles It was amazing

Just seems so strange to get up and not be making a pick on Premier League soccer, or choosing between Michigan or Iowa at Noon. As of last night, ESPN has ended its free Streak for the Cash contest after 14 years. Never got close to winning the monthly prize money, though my best winning streak was 23. What made the game so much fun was the diversity of athletic events you got to pick from all over the world. My final total was 7018 wins, 4594 losses and 67 pushes. Pushes are not calculated in the winning percentage, so it wound up at 60.44 percent.

Yeah: with only a few weeks left before the elections, it’s hard to see where “primaries” are going to be a factor in GOPers’ voting: but then, it’s SOP for today’s Republicans: voting records are merely there for the show: so they can look “responsible” for voting against “wasteful spending” secure in the knowledge that their districts/constituents will still benefit from said spending.
Hypocritical BS, of course, but since most of these creatures represent ruby-red “safe” districts, pointing it out rarely does any good.

Yep, the looters know they can carry.

The same year as the Trayvon Martin case, an African American woman, Marissa Alexander, fired a warning shot in her apartment that injured no one to protect herself from her estranged husband. She was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Eventually, a new trial was ordered but, instead, she was released after serving 3 years and the sentence was reduced to time served. Laws for blacks are different for whites.
